Victim Had No Gun, but Knocked the Stuffings Out of Assailant

Pay attention readers; this was an attempted robbery, not theft.  A gun for self defense was not necessary, and no one died.  This a constructive resolution.

A better effort at prevention would be to reduce the number of firearms that end up making that bad transfer through a variety of means, including careless and unsecure storage by gun owners contributing to theft, and irresponsible and unregulated private sales.

Mugger left bloodied after attempt on MMA fighter

Chicago police say Anthony Miranda tried to rob an MMA fighter.

CHICAGO -- A convicted felon decided to mug an MMA fighter on the Southwest Side of Chicago, police say, and ended up paying a steep price.
Police did not release the victim's name but said he was able to ward off Anthony Miranda, 24, who ended up with two black eyes and a gunshot wound to the ankle after a tussle.
The victim was sitting in his parked car near 55th St. and Kenneth when Anthony Miranda, 24, walked up to the car asking for a lighter, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
When the victim did not have one, Miranda pulled out a handgun and demanded money, police officials said. He then demanded the victim get out of the car.

At some point, the victim was able to grab control of the gun while Miranda's attention was diverted. The two men wrestled on the ground and during the fight, Miranda accidentally discharged his gun, shooting himself in the ankle, police said.
The victim was able to pin down Miranda until police arrived and later told officials he was a martial arts expert and ultimate fighting champion.
Miranda was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with a face full of cuts and two black eyes, police said. He has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm, a class X felony.
Records show Miranda has several convictions, including at least one for a residential burglary. He was ordered held on $350,000 bond Sunday.

  1. I do hope that Mr. Miranda was Mirandized. It looks like he also got bent, stapled and mutilated.

Fairly soon, Greg Camp will be along to tell us that MMA fighters beatin' down gunzthugz is a statistically insignifican population.

  2. So the fighter resisted and the mugger ended up shot and beaten as a result. Sounds like assault to me. Why didn't the victim just cooperate and call the police afterwards? As we all know, the police would have responded in time.

If the guy is indeed a professional MMA fighter then he's in a bit different league than you and I. Professional fighters, like professional gamblers, look for "tells" that indicate what the opponent is going to do next. It's still VERY risky, but if you're within arms (of legs) length of a professional MMA fighter you could be in serious shit, pretty quick.

  4. Because it was more fun for the fighter to help the aggressor shoot himself in the ankle rather than his foot or his private parts, and then instruct him in how impolite the aggressor's actions were.

I'm guessing that the mugger wanna-be will rethinking his choice of career. He should; he doesn't appear to be any good at it.

The martial arts expert appears to have called the police in plenty of time.

Or maybe it was the mugger who called the police to come rescue him from the victim of the attempted robbery?

  5. Dog Gone,

What you failed to acknowledge is that a violent response saved the innocent person who was attacked. Whether it's a gun or a skilled person's fists, violence is the answer to some problems.

  6. Greg Camp:

What you fail to understand is that yours and your fellow gunzloonz absolute insanity on the subject of sane and reasonable gun control has pumped millions upon millions of firearms into the black and gray market. Those gunz are then used to commit crimes that result in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of thousands of people per year. The number of people "saved" by moronz like you is but a small fraction of that.

That there will always be crime and criminals is beyond doubt. That idiotz like you and your gunzloonz buddies contribute to the problem is also beyond doubt.

Ah, Greg; once again you display your appalling lack of critical thinking in this comment.

By what reasoning can you possibly claim a failure on my part to acknowledge the response that saved this martial arts expert from gun violence?

    Did you READ the headline?

Victim Had No Gun, but - and here is the RESPONSE part- knocked the stuffings out of assailant?

Did you then see the secondary heading?
That is the one that reads
Mugger left bloodied after attempt on MMA fighter

Did you perhaps think the bad guy was accidentally bloodied in a friendly tickle fight? Or perhaps the injuries occurred while they gently bumped each other with down stuffed pillows?

You DID then see the PHOTO, a very LARGE photo, of the alleged robber underneath that secondary headline?

And did you then read the text of the article? That would be the text which included the following key phrases which refer quite specifically to violence:
he was able to ward off Anthony Miranda, 24, who ended up with two black eyes and a gunshot wound to the ankle after a tussle.

The article then goes on to describe what the response was in greater detail that caused those injuries:
At some point, the victim was able to grab control of the gun while Miranda's attention was diverted. The two men wrestled on the ground and during the fight, Miranda accidentally discharged his gun, shooting himself in the ankle, police said.
The victim was able to pin down Miranda until police arrived and later told officials he was a martial arts expert and ultimate fighting champion.
Miranda was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with a face full of cuts and two black eyes, police said.

No Greg, I clearly acknowledge that NON LETHAL VIOLENCE can be a perfectly successful response to a threat by a bad guy with a firearm. In this case it was a martial arts expert, but there are many instances of people less physically expert who ALSO disarm someone who attempts to rob them with a firearm.

    More ordinary people, like you.

As soon as I can get the video clip, I am looking forward to posting the interview of the extremely frail elderly woman here in MN who had a very different way of disarming a robber who tried to take her money with a gun.

You miss the point Greg. There are solutions to many situations, that do NOT require a gun and do not require lethal force either. Since you clearly have such abysmally poor analytical skills,I doubt YOU know or can properly identify when those situations are occurring that DO, genuinely, require lethal force, and THAT is why I strongly distrust YOU carrying a firearm.

YOU make dumb mistakes. Someone else could die where that death could be avoided - AND your death or injury could also be avoided - because you are obsessed with your gun fetish as a solution.

  8. My bad; I had meant to write that Greg lacks critical thinking, AND a functional capacity for observation.

  9. What happened to your belief in submitting to the robber so no one gets hurt?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I don't see where the martial arts expert got hurt.

That would be far less likely a scenario for the majority of the rest of us in that situation.

The purpose of giving a robber your money instead of arguing - or worse, getting in a shootout with someone who is already pointing a gun at you - is that YOU are likely to experience greater harm, either death or injury, than the bad guy.

The issue goes to the minimum level of violence necessary to preserve your own life and limb.

I have no doubt that this martial arts expert was perfectly capable of causing greater injury, even of killing this guy with his bare hands. That this robber ONLY has some bruises, contusions, and a matching pair of black eyes IS better than broken bones, or possible permanent impairment of some kind. It is a glowing testament to the restraint of this martial arts expert.

That the guy has a bullet wound to his ankle is the robber's own damn fault for using a gun in the first place, a sort of cosmic / poetic justice.

Sheesh, it appears I have to provide even more explicit explanation for these posts, because you guys are so willfully obtuse.

  11. Dog Gone,

You're the one who advocates for non-violent solutions to crime. In this particular case, a violent solution worked. That's my point.

You say that I make dumb mistakes. I've demonstrated here that I'm completely capable of using language. If you meant a stupid mistake, then I invite you to show me where I've done that.

By the way, in all of your years of quality education, did no one teach you how to be concise?

  12. Greg Camp:

"Highly explosive" is a technical term; dumb mistake.

"The M-15 is NOT A RIFLE"; dumb mistake.

Picture of yourself with YOUR FINGER ON THE TRIGGER OF YOUR GUN, way past dumb mistake.

    Greg sez:

"By the way, in all of your years of quality education, did no one teach you how to be concise?".

    BTW, Greg, Hemingway, you ain't.

  13. Democommie,

I said that "high explosive" is a technical term. I called "highly explosive" sensationalism.

The M-15 is a variant of the M-14 and was indeed a battle rifle. The M-16 is an assault rifle or carbine.

The picture in question was for the specific purpose of representing one period of American history. It would have been wrong to show someone from that time following Cooper's Rule 3.

But in all of this, I never expected you to understand, since I was addressing Dog Gone.
