Josh Horwitz on the Clackamas Mall Shooting

It's happened again. Yesterday Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, opened fire with an AR-15 assault rifle at the busy Clackamas Town Center mall in Portland, Oregon. According to witnesses, Roberts wore a hockey mask, camouflage and a bulletproof vest. Witnesses heard the gunman say "I am the shooter" before firing up to 60 shots, killing 2 people and seriously wounding a 15-year-old girl. Police arrived to a scene of pandemonium, with shoppers hiding in bathrooms and dressing rooms and locked down in stores. The gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the scene.

This has gone much too far, and none of us want to live in a country where people have to face random gunfire from assault weapons while doing their holiday shopping at the mall.

Our elected leaders need to hear from you RIGHT NOW that you've had enough of lax laws that enable daily gun violence tragedies. Please take action right away to create sustained pressure for sane gun laws:

1) Call your U.S. Senators and Representative through the U.S. Capitol Hotline at (202) 224-3121 and tell them you want to see the "Fix Gun Checks Act" and a new Assault Weapons Ban enacted, immediately.

2) Call President Obama at (202) 456-1111
and tell him you want him to show leadership on this issue and speak out publicly and forcefully about the need for URGENT action to strengthen our gun laws.

Let's make it clear to our elected leaders that we are sick and tired of waiting for the next mass shooting to occur in our malls, movie theaters, or schools! Together we can send a strong message and build safer communities free from the scourge of gun violence.

Sincerely,

Josh Horwitz
Executive Director

  1. So Josh Horror wants us to call our elected representatives? My senators and member of the House are in favor of gun rights. So am I. Should I send messages?

Of course, he wants "urgent" action. Rushing to pass laws is rarely a good idea with regard to the rights of citizens, but we've seen that the gun control freaks don't care about that.

  2. There is no doubt this event was a horrific tragedy for the victims and their families. My sympathies and prayers go out to them.

Perspective is important here. I can only find two people in the entire U.S. who used AR-15 style semi-automatic rifles to attempt multiple murders this year. Fortunately, they only managed to kill or wound a few people with those rifles.

Two people misusing a certain type of rifle in the entire U.S. is hardly a reason to ban that type of rifle. Everyone else who owns that type of rifle used it responsibly for self defense, hunting, and target/competition shooting.

    1. You're being a bit tricky there. You want to limit your search to AR-15s only. What you guys used to say is "long guns" are almost never used in crime. Anyone reading the news lately knows that's bullshit, so what do you do, you get real specific to make the same claim.

  3. Sorry Josh. Not accepting new gun laws at this time. Check back with us around, oh, say 2070.

    1. So you admit that a prohibitive firearms policy is inevitable? Why do you resist? It does you no good.

History is on our side. We will bury you.

I will be long gone by 2070. You may well live to see that day when you must submit to my ideological progeny.

    2. Sorry for you, it won't take till 2070. The Supreme Court is going to change over the next 4 years. People are getting sick and tired of these spree shootings which are directly related to the loose gun laws and attitudes in the country. I say by 2020 we'll see a totally different picture.

    3. Krushchev wanna-be and Mikeb agree: Their side will destroy freedom soon. It's so much fun to watch delusional people--from afar.

  4. For you gunsucks, I pray the prayer of St Gunsel: Please, St Gunsel, allow these gunsucks and their significant others to be on the front lines of the next gun massacre.

    1. This comment only serves to undermine the gun control cause. The only thing gun control has going for it is the claim that its advocates are concerned about the safety of all of us. Comments expressing a desire to see someone shot show that what gun control is really about is control.

Really? Does that mean that you're against the "Pro Blowin People Who Are On My Lawn The Fuck Away!" pols ramming ccw and "shall issue" laws through their state leges? No? If not, why not? Show your work, son.

    1. Yes, I support moving states from no-issue or may-issue to shall-issue systems. Those laws have been on the books in many states for decades, and no disaster has happened. Violent crime is declining across the country.

Josh Horror has more in common with the folks who pushed the PATRIOT Act than with freedom-loving Americans.
